Tanzanian's playing Beethoven?
How is it that the classical music styling of Ludwig Van Beethoven can be heard in Tanzanian neighborhoods? By creating a symphony orchestra. Called the "Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste" in Kinshasa, they like to be known as the only "black" symphony orchestra. Committing to the end, these ordinary men and women practice their instruments or work on vocal exercises until their voices are hoarse or they have blisters on their fingers. They continued this routine for days and then weeks and then months where they have worked incredibly hard before coming to practice with the orchestra. After perfecting the performance, they finally perform at the grand concert in the nations capital. Tanzanian's are extremely moved with the melodious sounds of Beethoven's European classical music.
In 2010, a 90-minute documentary film titled "Kinshasa Symphony" was made depicting these musicians and their daily lives. The film also showed the final performance in the capital of Tanzania.
